I would love to say that I am great at makeup, but that would be an awful lie. I do okay for myself, especially since I like to keep things super simple. My little sister in law is way better than me and my best friend has a strong lipstick game. Me? I stick to mascara and a random splattering of blush. When I put on lipstick I feel like a damn cover girl, and it can stress me out. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a bold red lip. Anything else and I feel like I have mismatched my skin tone and I usually take it off after an hour.
I used to be more interested in makeup. I was an avid Seventeen and Cosmopolitan reader and I loved to try out new makeup looks I found within the magazine. But, being a stay at home mom for the last year has really stepped me back. When I am home talking to my one -year-old all day, I’m not really inspired to take the time to do my makeup. And anything that takes longer than five minutes isn’t going to fly with Isaac trying to destroy my house whenever possible.
This past summer I was in a slump. Maybe it was the fact that I was going to be hitting a quarter of a century old or I was feeling guilty about staying home and feeling unproductive. I didn’t put on makeup unless we were doing something fancy, all summer. Hint: we didn’t do anything fancy.
Honestly, it took a toll on me and I found that I was upset that I was “just a mom.”
And that is just not fair to me or my kid.

So this fall I have been making it a priority to get up early, get showered and put on a swipe of makeup. When I do this, I feel so much more productive PLUS I feel more confident in myself. Yeah I’m just a mom, but I am a kick ass mom and a great homemaker (most of the time). Creating this new routine for myself has also inspired me to focus on my writing and find a new hobby, baking.
Getting up early, putting on makeup, and engrossing my free time in a hobby instead of Netflix has left me feeling fulfilled.
And no, I’m not putting on magazine worthy makeup. Instead, I’ve found a perfect, five minute, stay-at-home-mom look that makes me feel like a confident + beautiful mom that doesn’t think twice when her husband comes home and wants to get out of the house.
The Products
Like I said earlier, I am no makeup expert. And I have always been a bare minimum kind of gal. You will hardly every find me in a full face of makeup and if you do, know that I am miserable. I can literally feel foundation clogging my pores and I feel so blessed that I have freckles and relatively clear skin. So my product list is small, cheap and can all be found at Ulta!

The Routine
It’s simple, I mean really simple, and at most takes 5 minutes. The fun part for me is that I have to do it right out of the shower or I won’t. I also need to make sure my eyelashes are dry or they don’t hold a curl for anything, and stick straight out and hit my glasses. (What is life?)
SO, after making sure my face is dry I moisturize with Olay Complete, which is great for me in summer since it’s SPF 15, and let that soak in while I brush out my hair & towel dry. Next, i swipe on the concealer under my eyelids. This is a two-fold reason: 1. it hides any mommy dark circles and 2. it brightens up under my eyes and helps not hide my eyes behind the glasses. I also swipe on some concealer on top of my lids and then blend everything out.

Next up are my brows. I use a brow spoolie and make sure my brows are brushed up and not squeezed into one line, because they do that *sigh*. I then use this Maybelline Brow Pen that my friend recommended and I LOVE. My brows actually stay together all day and it’s so easy to use. I basically just brush with the flow of my eyebrows and make sure it’s all filled in. I have the light brown color, but there are a few different ones to choose from.
I don’t always put on any kind of eye shadow but when I do I just use the cream pencil on my lid and then use my finger to blend it in a bit. I really only do this when I know I am doing something more than going to the grocery store that day.
Finally I do my lashes. When I curl I clamp, push the top into my eye a little bit and hold for 20-30 seconds. Like I said, they will stick straight out and hit my glasses if I’m not extra about this. After I curl one lash I swipe on the primer followed immediately by mascara and then move to the second eye.
When I am feeling really frisky I will throw on a lip color, typically either a nude pink or a bold red, and that’s it! As I said, super simple and super QUICK. By the time I am done in the bathroom my kid is usually banging on the door and yelling at me to hurry the hell up. So that is really all I have time for or care to do. The simplicity also keeps me from worrying about anything being smudged. Which is a win for any mom 🙂
Now I will say that I am working on upping my makeup game once again (still trying to find out the use of Primer?) so I might be back to hit you with an awesome quick + easy date night look. But for now, drop me a comment below with your must have makeup item(s), I am dying to try some new things out!
